The Rocco Jones Report:: Round 6 vs West Coast- 100% devoid of humour

The Good News:

A lot of good news from a game we actually lost. Thought we ran harder and were tougher in contests than we have been this season. We really took it up to the best side going around on their own patch.

Boyd was superb in negating role on Kerr. We don’t have any midfielders who make life uncomfortable for their opponents (when they don’t have the ball); I think Boyd can fill a vital role. Kerr can find room in a phone booth but on Boyd he struggled to effective find space to work in all day. Boyd was annoying, close checking involved holding onto him at the right time and putting a bit more into his tackles. Played the type of game we haven’t seen from a Bulldog for along time. Importantly, he also hurt his opponent going the other way, collecting 22 disposals while keeping Kerr to a meager 14 touches.

Harris was great again in an attacking defender, I love him in the role.

Cross and West still play for us, that’s nice.

Jordy had another strong showing, that’s six from six. Breaks lines through his running and opens up play with his kicking. Often opens up play single-handedly when we look really stagnate.

The Bad News:

While the work rate was up, our skills were poor. Missed far too many easy targets in a tight game like that. We froze under pressure too often, either coughing up the ball or going for the wrong option.

We are still carrying too many passengers. Eagle is very poor without the play, weak in a contest and his skills are just not good enough for an offensive player. I’d burn him for Faulkner/Harbrow. Griffen was again disappointing. Every week he shows a couple of signs of brilliance, but goes missing for far too long. Sam Power was barely noticeable.

Aker is a worry. When chasing he looked a lot more like a lumbering Peter Street than the Jason Akermanis of old. Let’s hope it’s a match fitness issue which will be resolved in a couple of weeks. At the moment he is looking like an old man.
